Learning

Learning is a critical element of any life’s work, especially social change-making. Many leaders in the multifaith movements for justice depend on us to create and offer learning opportunities for them in faith-rooted communications.

Our trainings, coaching, and online learning are proudly powered by Auburn Seminary, which has been equipping faith leaders to stand for justice for decades.

Coaching & Consulting

We’re huge believers in the power of one-on-one and team coaching and consulting to provide a reflective space and expertise where faith-rooted change-makers can find time to learn in the midst of their busy schedules. With our signature mash-up of coaching and consulting, we design learning plans for individuals, groups, and organizations in the multifaith movement for justice that use coaching methodology, convening best practices, and our superpowers in prophetic communications to create deep learning experiences.

  • Why it works

Maybe you’ve had this experience: You go to a training, learn new skills and get excited to implement them, but come back and have trouble creating new practices or you get stuck.

The truth is that one-off trainings or teambuilding events are insufficient for creating organizational and even personal change. As one coach puts it, “You can train everyone in an organization in a set of skills but it won’t be enough to create a shift in the climate, the culture and the social norms that guide behavior/the deeply engrained routines and habits.”

That’s where coaching and consulting come in – to make sure new learnings stick. The combination of coaching and consulting means advice and expertise when you need it, and clarity and motivation when you’re stuck. Our goal is to give you the support and insight to achieve your dreams and goals.

  • Details

Our team includes consultants with extensive expertise in strategic communications, technology, organizing, and fundraising. Some of the coaching and consulting subjects we cover:

    • Messaging
    • Campaign strategy
    • Email blasts
    • Petitions
    • Facebook / Twitter
    • Digital Storytelling
    • Graphic design for the Web and Social Media
    • Writing for the Web
    • Online Fundraising

We like to initiate coaching and consulting with a deep survey to help us know what your vision of success truly is, and what you need to get there.

Then we have weekly or bimonthly calls for 3-6 months to work towards achieving your goals.

Costs: $200 / hour (prep time not included in this fee). Depending on your organization’s size and budget, we may have discounts available.

Digital Organizing for Faith-Rooted Activists

Online organizing? Email blasts? Social media? Facebook and Twitter? Websites? Petitions? What about good ol’ one-on-ones and days of action?

You’re right, nothing can replace the importance of building relationships and organizing communities on the ground. But we hold this conviction alongside another one — that the Internet offers a new set of radically powerful tools that create opportunities for mass mobilization, ethical spectacles, media making, fundraising, and more that can dramatically enhance your ability to make the change you seek.

  • Details

Depending on the available time and budget, these trainings can be conducted in half-day or full-day time frames. 10-15 people is an ideal size for small groups. We can work with larger groups too.

Our trainings are done through Auburn (which is the leadership development institute that houses Groundswell). Here’s a link with the training fees: www.auburnseminary.org/training-fees.

  • Training Highlights

    – Learn the theory behind successful online (and offline) campaigns – how to build a power map, create a credible and effective theory of change, figure out who your target is to get the change you want, and more.

    – Space and time to road test campaign ideas and digital strategies with other trainees and expert Groundswell trainers in how to take your campaigns to the next level online.

    – A campaign game that helps trainees put newly learned concepts and skills to use in a live game atmosphere.

    – Learn how to put your faith, values, and stories at the center of your message and action for social change.

After the training, I’m excited for growing the organization from where it is to where we want it to be, and to run bigger, broader, better campaigns. The training showed us how we get our story out, use the tools, and build an audience.

Auburn Media has been very successful in enabling religious communities to effectively convey their message through the media. Auburn’s uniqueness lies in its understanding the power of media and how religious leaders should frame their messages for the general public.

STORYTELLING FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

As people of faith, we are people of the story. Yet as change-makers, we often fail to deploy our strongest assets—our stories, our humanity, and our faith traditions—as we advocate for change.

Faith-rooted story-telling, in particular, has the unique ability to open hearts, so that we can open minds to our causes. Our trainers apply the theory of story-telling to the multifaith movement for justice, offering cutting-edge, practical, faith-rooted trainings in how to effectively communicate through story.

    – To equip your leaders with the theory and practical applications of storytelling for social change in order to improve your ability to rally support to vital issues through fundraising, organizing, communications and more.

    – To root your leaders-turned-storytellers in the vitality of their own personal story, choices they’ve made, and resonant experiences in order to keep you connected to why you entered this work, and why you are in it for the long haul.

Story telling is an effective way of communicating, but many of us don’t have the unique talent that it takes to tell a good story. Isaac is the go-to person to learn this skill and will help you, as he has helped Interfaith Power and Light leaders, to hone in on the passion that hides in all of us. You will learn to give heartfelt presentations in a faith-rooted way about the work you do.

Faith-Rooted Organizing

Faith leaders and communities have often been key players in movements for justice, in the U.S. and around the world.

However, faith-based organizing doesn’t always go deep enough into the wells of faith to utilize all of the potential gifts that religious traditions and communities can bring. “Faith-rooted organizing” is a new approach that builds on ancient foundations to bring all of the potential power of the Spirit to initiatives for community and societal transformation.
